 Widowed Persons Service warmly invites you to participate in any or all of our events and programs. Nearly all events are free of cost unless otherwise indicated. Donations are always welcomed.

Entertainment & Social Events

August Office Supply Shower (August 21, 2019 at 1 PM:  You are cordially invited to attend the August Office Supply Shower held at the Richmond Community Senior Center 1600 South Second Street in Richmond. This lite afternoon party is a time of games, refreshments, fellowship, and a shower of office supply gifts for the WPS office cupboard. No charge to attend.

JOY in Western Wayne (Every Wednesday at 8 AM):  JOY is "Just Over Youth". The joyful group meets every Wednesday at 8 AM at Lumpy's Café in Cambridge City, Indiana. A fun social time! Not cost to attend this meeting. Breakfast is your optional.

Meet-n-Eat at Carver's Restaurant  (Every Tuesday at 3:30 PM.  Program begins at 4 PM):  Join the Meet-n-Eat group as they meet together and dine together at Carver's Restaurant (on Chester Blvd in Richmond, Indiana).  Come and help us celebrate life in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. If you choose to dine with us, dinner is on your own.  Or, if you prefer to stop by just for the special weekly program, you may join us at 4 PM for an assortment of educational or entertaining venues. No charge to attend. Dinner is your option. We'd love to have you join us! You'll be glad you did!

Annual WPS Birthday Party and Volunteer Recognition (May 8, 2019 at 2 PM:  Help us celebrate a new year of WPS by joining your friends for afternoon refreshments and fun entertainment at the Richmond Community Senior Center. Did you know Richmond's WPS (which was founded in 1977) is the nation's second oldest WPS organization- second only to Washington DC. (2019 will mark our 42nd year together!)  No charge to attend. Donations are welcomed. Come and meet some new friends (or join some familiar faces) and share an afternoon of fun, refreshments, and door prizes!

Jerry Lawrence Golf Tournament:   2016 was the final year for the JLGT tournament. WPS wishes to thank the golfers, Highland Golf Course, and the many supporters of the JLGT golf outing. We invite everyone to continue to support WPS through memorial contributions and support in memory of our friend, Jerry Lawrence.   

50-50 Draw (at MCL Meet-n-Eat on the last Tuesday of the month):  You never know what you will win. From $3 to $30.... or more. For more information, contact Donna at (765) 983-7307. 

Over Coffee (4th Monday at 2 PM every month at Richmond Community Senior Center):   Stop by the Senior Center for a cup of coffee. Not a coffee drinker?  Other refreshments are also available! This group meets monthly to just talk 'over coffee'- everything from impromptu conversations of everyday interest to selected topics for thought provoking enjoyment.   It's a fun way to meet some new friends, enjoy some good friends, and relax for an hour or two.  Don't be shy.   There's always room for you!   No cost to attend.

WPS Thanksgiving Pitch-In Dinner at Richmond Community Senior Center- November 9, 2019 at 4 PM:  Join your friends and widowed persons family at a Thanksgiving Pitch In. There is no cost to attend. Just bring your favorite covered dish to share. Meat and beverages are provided.     

Newly Widowed Class (Spring, Summer, and Fall classes as scheduled):  Are you newly widowed- or know someone who is? This no cost class is extremely helpful. Contact the WPS office for exact dates and times for the next available class.

Creative Cooking with Judi (Next class:  October 9, 2019 at 2 PM):  WPS Board Member and retired pastor, Judi Marshall, offers a wonderful class with cooking suggestions, culinary ideas, and a well planned 'how-to' program on preparing delicious and wholesome meals for one or two people. Whether you are an experienced self proclaimed culinary expert or can't figure out the difference between a spoon or fork, Judi will make navigating the kitchen an easier and exciting venture for you. No cost to attend but prior reservations are requested for adequate food and supply count. Creative Cooking classes are generally held in October. Call the WPS office for more information. 

​The Country Store:  Located in the Widowed Persons Service office, the small Country Store features greeting cards, novelties, household items, gifts, antiques, hand made items, and so much more.  The store is open to the public, and all items are generously donated to WPS and are priced very reasonably.  Proceeds from all merchandise sales benefit the WPS educational and outreach programs.  Contact Donna at (765) 983-7307 to make donations or for more information.    (NOTE:  Donations of household odds and ends, dishes, kitchen wares, antiques, new greeting cards, and other items are desperately needed at this time.  Donations may be brought to the WPS office during normal business hours.  Due to limited storage, WPS cannot accept clothing donations at this time).   


Informational & Educational Events

Volunteer Office Training (as needed):  Interested in volunteering with Widowed Persons Service? We can always use your help! From making caring phone calls to folding newsletters, WPS has something for you to do. Contact Donna for more information at (765) 983-7307.

Newly Widowed Class (Class times are to be announced):  Are you recently widowed? Do you feel overwhelmed? Do you wonder how others cope? Or, do you just need to talk or listen? Join the class where others are going through what you are experiencing. For more information or to register for a class, contact WPS at (765) 983-7307. There is no cost to you.

Younger Survivors Class (Classes meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month at Martha Dwyer Center  1417 North 'A' Street in Richmond, IN):  Most people think of widowed individuals as senior adults.  Fact is, nearly one third of widowed persons are under the age of 60. For information about the Younger Survivors Class, please call WPS at (765) 983-7307.  There is no cost to attend and no reservations are required.  Come as you are and whenever you can.

The WPS office mails approximately 1000 newsletters to widowed individuals every month. This free newsletter contains noteworthy WPS news, interesting articles, words of wisdom, and "Our Time Together," a feature article about everyday memories and life 'in the past lane.'
